Song of the Day: Lil Kim, "Suck My Dick"
This is Song of the Day. Explanation here.
Since I'm now a full-time employee of SiriusXM, I've been spending a lot more time listening to satellite radio. I like to keep track of what else is going on with the channels I work for, but my favorite preset at the moment is SiriusXM Fly, which traffics in hip-hop and R&B from the '90s and early 2000s.
The real gems are obviously in the staples from my middle and high school dances: Ginuwine's immortal "Pony," K-Ci & JoJo's "All My Life," Next's "Too Close," Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody?," Missy Elliott's "Sock It 2 Me," Puff Daddy's "It's All About the Benjamins," Montell Jordan's "This Is How We Do It," Blackstreet's "No Diggity," and various Timbaland and R. Kelly jams too numerous to mention. The rest of the playlist is filled in with lots of Biggie and Tupac, some garbage from just after the turn of the century when all of rap music sounded like Swizz Beatz passed out on his tinniest keyboard, and more Lil Kim deep cuts than logic should dictate.
Not that I'm complaining. Kim's 1996 solo debut Hard Core is one of the 10 best hip-hop albums of the decade, and her 2000 follow-up The Notorious K.I.M. is deeply underrated. I don't remember "Suck My Dick" being a single, but it popped up on Fly the other evening, and man was I happy to hear it. The beat has that almost goofy off-kilter loop, and Kim is at her foul-mouthed best. Even though I'm a guy and possess the appropriate appendage, I still think the line "If I was a dude I'd tell y'all to suck my dick" is pretty badass. Enjoy the filth.
