Song of the Day: Single Mothers, "Marbles"
This is Song of the Day. Explanation here.
Like a lot of kids who watched MTV and dressed like an extra in this Ammonia video, I was in a series of not-very-good garage bands during my middle and high school years. They were all general variations on punk combos, inspired by our incessant obsessing over Green Day's Dookie and the then-hot ska revival. They undoubtedly sucked, and I never contributed to a song that I was actually proud of. But at the time, in my mind, we sounded like this kickass hardcore combo from Canada who play fast and yell really loud and say pithy things about PhD candidates in "Marbles." I've spent years trying to make my rage sound this smart and my brainy cultural observations sound this unhinged. Once again, Canada cracked the code before we even realized there was a problem. Thanks Canada!
